Visit The Bridge

If you would like to visit Warrington Transporter Bridge, there are several ways to access it. However, please see the warning below about Giant Hogweed before making a trip to the bridge.

Giant Hogweed

Wednesday 11th May, 2022

Unfortunately, Giant Hogweed is once again growing on the riverbank near to the bridge, therefore WE STRONGLY ADVISE AGAINST FOLLOWING THE ROUTE VIA SLUTCHERS LANE. We recommend that between March and September, visitors to the bridge should only follow the route through the works. Click here to see this route in detail.

If travelling by car, the easiest way is via Slutchers Lane - car parking is available at the front of TeamSport Indoor Karting and from there, it is only a 10 - 15 minute walk to the Transporter Bridge. Click here to see the route in detail.

The more interesting way involves leaving the car on Old Liverpool Road, off Thewlis Street (by the Pink Eye building) and a 15 - 20 minute walk along the public right of way through the former Crosfields chemical works (now PQ Corporation). Click here to see this route in detail.

If travelling by train to Warrington to see the bridge, there is a shortcut just outside Bank Quay Station - click here to see this route in detail.

Access from Slutchers Lane

If following a satnav, please use postcode WA1 1NA

Please use extreme caution if using this route as giant hogweed is growing in the area again. We strongly advise only using the route through the works at the current time.

From Wilson Patten Street A5061, turn onto Slutchers Lane. Follow the road up the hill and turn right as soon as you cross over the railway, following the brown signs for Warrington Transporter Bridge.

Follow the road down the hill and round the corner until you come to a small bridge that crosses underneath the railway - take care at this bridge as all road traffic, travelling in both directions, uses the right-hand arch! (The middle arch is constantly flooded so is never used, and the left-hand arch is for pedestrians only, although due to the water, they also have to use the right-hand arch!) Once under the bridge, you will see TeamSport Indoor Karting (formerly Speed Karting) in front of you. Please park your car in their car park and continue on foot from this point, taking the road to the left shown in the picture below, following the Warrington Animal Welfare and green RSPCA signs.

As you walk up the road from the TeamSport car park towards the RSPCA, you will come to some old railway lines running across the road - these are the tracks that took trains to and from the Transporter Bridge before it was converted to carry road vehicles in 1940. You can see the Transporter Bridge if you look through the gates.

Follow the road past the RSPCA on the right and round a tight right-hand bend until you come to the Warrington Animal Welfare car park where you can enjoy a great view of the Transporter Bridge! The path to the Bridge is in the corner of the car park. (Please do not park your car here as this car park is very small - your car should be left in the TeamSport Indoor Karting car park.)

Follow the path through the trees and across the field, passing the roadbridge on the right.

In the corner of the field is the path leading down to the riverbank - take care on this path as there are no steps, it is just a slope down to the riverbank and can be slippy in wet weather conditions.

At the bottom of the path, turn right at the signpost and head back towards the road bridge.

Walk under the roadbridge and carry on following the path - you will see the Transporter Bridge in front of you.

Access from Old Liverpool Road through the chemical works

If following a satnav, please use postcode WA5 1AP

Park on Old Liverpool Road near the Pink Eye building - be aware of the parking restrictions though! - or park in the Lidl car park (please go inside the shop and make a purchase if you are using their car park though!) As you approach the level crossing by the base of the Pink Eye building, you will see the Transporter Bridge directly in front of you in the distance.

Once over the level crossing, turn left and follow the path between the wall and the storage containers. As you walk along the path, the wall gives way to metal railings giving you a good view of the railway and any trains that go past!

Walk through the first gate... and as you get to the second gate, you will hear a recorded message advising you that "Security know you are here and are watching you on CCTV - please follow the green painted line which marks out the public right of way."

As you walk through the second gate, if you look to your right, you will see the Transporter Bridge just coming into view around the bend in the river - the pipe bridge going across the river at this point is built on the location of the original Transporter Bridge. Follow the green painted line into the site.

Walk past the Crosfields signal box and keep following the green line.

Go over the first crossing... and the second.

Follow the green line for a short distance to the third crossing. Once over the crossing, keep to the right of the barrier and follow the green line again.

At this point, the green line stops... keep following the path until you reach the Transporter Bridge.

Access from Bank Quay Station

Please use extreme caution if using this route as giant hogweed is growing in the area again. We strongly advise only using the route through the works at the current time.

As you come out of Bank Quay station, look to your right for the steps by the two bins. Walk up the steps and onto the bridge.

Walk across the bridge and down the steps on the other side.

There are a lot of steps to go down to reach the path at the bottom - the path can be a little muddy in wet weather conditions. Follow the path and you will come to a 'cage' section.

At the end of the 'cage' section are lots more steps up... and down again.

Follow the path to the barrier at the end, then turn right out of the barrier and follow the road straight on running alongside the railway until you come to a small bridge that crosses underneath the railway.

Take care at this bridge as all road traffic, travelling in both directions, uses the right-hand arch! (The middle arch is constantly flooded so is never used, and the left-hand arch is for pedestrians only, although due to the water, they also have to use the right-hand arch!)
